Gem of the Day: Can you add this to my regular chores?

I had been preparing for a visit from my relatives, and was not quite finished straightening up and getting things clean.  I had just picked up Timmy from a basketball camp, and he was anxious to head out to the pool.  I told him that I still had a few things to finish up before our guests arrive, and we could go hang out for a couple hours at the pool, as long as I finished a few things first.  Wonderful son that he is, chimed in, oh, ok, I can help you.  I sarcastically replied, “Oh, like clean the bathroom for me?”, and he said sure!  Now, that’s not something you often hear from a nine year old–mom I’d love to clean the bathroom for ya.

Talk about bring a little smile to my face. So, we pulled out the various cleaning solutions, and we were on our way to schooling my little guy on how to clean a bathroom.  Turns out he really loves to squirt.   Like REALLY loves to squirt.  In his quest to get all things clean, he had sprayed so much lysol cleaner that it looked like the tub was ready and waiting with a bubble bath.  He had hopped in the tub, and was happily scrubbing away.  He had decided that goods suds should not be wasted and had plastered a soapy beard and mustache onto his face.  I said, well, probably not the best thing to be doing, slapping chemicals on your face, but hey, it’s already done.  He was commented how fun it was, and had asked, “Hey can we add this to my regular chores?”  Ah, talk about light up my face.

We continued to work on the rest of the bathroom, and he particularly like squirting the blue toilet cleaner and giving it a whirl with the scrub brush.  Don’t know where this kid came from, certainly not from his mom who definitively will not win any awards for best housekeeper on the planet.

As we were finishing up, he secured a pair of shades, and completed the new look–reminded me of one of the guys from ZZ-Top.  Well, I guess if you have to do chores, you may as well have fun with it, right?  I guess we all have a lot to learn from this–if you have a little fun while doing the mundane, sometimes it’s not so bad after all.  I don’t know exactly how long my son will be enamored with his cleaning bug, but I’m certainly going to try to keep it going!
